Firms boost acrylic polymers prices

The Rohm & Haas paint and coatings materials business appears to have led price increases for acrylic products sold in North America. The increases are 4¢/lb for acrylic, styrene-acrylic and vinyl-acetate emulsion polymers and 5¢-8¢ for various solvent-borne polymers. These chemicals are sold to the North American pressure sensitive adhesives, textile, non-woven and construction adhesives industries. Reichhold also announced a general price increase for solvent based and water based coating products sold in North America by a minimum of 6¢/lb. Dow says its acrylic increases average 4¢/lb. In making its pricing announcement, James Swanson, Rohn & Haas vice president, says “the cost of crude oil and natural gas are continuing to put unprecedented pressure on pricing, but we're also now seeing increases in the cost of raw materials (such as ammonia and sulfuric acid) that had been relatively stable until now.” Swanson also notes that ongoing speculation in the commodity market has had a destabilizing effect on the price of raw materials.”
