Intel has unveiled a new microchip, dubbed Canmore, which will be marketed to makers of such consumer electronics devices as set-top boxes, media players and televisions. A Reuters report says CEO Paul Otellini believes the new chip will go on sale in the second half of 2008 and will consist of a processor like those used in personal computers but augmented to handle high-definition video, surround sound and 3D graphics.
Intel competes mainly with Advanced Micro Devices, the second-biggest maker, in its sales of personal computer microprocessors. The new market sectors targeted by Otellini for the new chip will pit the California-based firm more squarely against such diversified chipmakers as Texas Instruments, Broadcom and Samsung Electronics of South Korea.
