Second checked bag will cost extra

By Tom Stundza -- Purchasing, 2/27/2008 11:41:00 AM

US Airways and United Airlines soon will charge $25 to check a second bag for flights. The Charlotte Observer says the new fee is intended to offset increased fuel prices, which have raised the airlines’ operating costs. US Airways’ website lists the new extra prices under Baggage Policies but offers no explanation. United Airlines says its customers purchasing nonrefundable domestic economy tickets who do not have status in Mileage Plus or Star Alliance may check one bag for free and a second bag for a $25 service fee.
