Buyers report that mill-price declines have accelerated as demand drops
Buyers across the country confirm that steel prices are in freefall even though steel production is coming down very quickly. “Things will get worse before they get better,” according to analysts and economists, who project that prices of steel mill products--already back to where they were in January--probably won’t hit bottom until the middle of 2009 and only begin to rise modestly late next year. The average transaction price for hot-rolled sheet in coil (HRC) this month is $686, according to Purchasing’s survey of buyers, who say advance bookings for December will be closer to $600.
