Coated paper stock prices move up

By Tom Stundza -- Purchasing, 4/23/2008 9:15:00 AM

Reduced coated paper demand from magazine publishers was offset by expanded purchases by catalog printers. Upshot: Transaction prices of coated free sheet and glossy supercalendered increased in April, according to market surveys by Purchasingdata.com and the Pulp & Paper Week subscription newsletter, In fact, No. 3 coated publication, in 60-lb rolls, at an average $1,039/ton surpassed $1,000 for the first time since late in 1997. The newsletter reports that supply of glossy supercalendered is tight. As for demand, buyers and analysts are at odds over second-half purchasing projections.
